Stripping Power. DMSO offers a safe alternative to the use of methylene chloride in consumer and industrial paint stripping products. It is less toxic than N-Methyl Pyrrolidone and methylene chloride, and is completely biodegradable.

Furniture paint stripping. DMSO has been used in formulations that have been found effective on common paints, stains, and varnishes. DMSO may also be formulated as a graffiti remover to remove coatings found in common graffiti, with minimal effect on undercoat.
